Dalrymple Bay
Mackay, Queensland
Wharf Extension

Dalrymple Bay is part of one of the largest coal exporting facilities in the world. The facility had throughput capacity of more than 44 million tonnes per year, however demand for greater productivity lead to the Stage 6 expansion project that has increased capacity to approximately 53 million tonnes per annum.

Clough Engineering were awarded the contract to supply, construct and commission the Stage 6 development. The scope of work included the construction of a new 264 metre long berth with a ship-loader, conveyor and drive tower, plus a 100 metre long access bridge and mooring dolphins.

Clough utilised two BSP hydraulic piling hammers supplied by Steelcom. The 357-9 Series hammer was used in 9 tonne capacity and the HH1146 Series hammer, designed to meet the trend of larger, more heavily loaded piles, was used in 14 tonne capacity.

Clough drove steel tubes that averaged 40 metres in length between 7 and 14 metres into the sea bed that consists of weathered clay. The tubes were 1.2m in diameter with wall thickness of between 12mm and 16mm.

Albem Pty Ltd is using Steelcom’s HH1146 drop hammer in 14 tonne configuration to drive over 300 piles ranging in size from 900mm to 1200mm in diameter and up to 50m in length. Dalrymple Bay, Mackay Queensland, Wharf Extension - using HH14 and HH357 Impact Hammers
