EnergyAustralia Stadium, earthworks for grandstand concourse
Haslin Construction Pty Ltd was responsible for the civil contract
of the new Eastern Grandstand at EnergyAustralia Stadium in Newcastle,
NSW. The work comprised earthworks for the tiered seating and grandstand
concourse as well as the seating structure and installation of
seats.
Sheet piles were installed under Frankipile Australia’s
contract, with the sheets providing support for ramps and proposed
excavations associated with the grandstand construction.
Frankipile
drove the LX16 sheet pile supplied by Steelcom Pty Ltd ex stock,
in lengths varying from 8 to 12 metres. Interestingly some of the
sheet pile has been shotcreted and will remain permanently exposed.
In order to shotcrete the sheet pile, spacers were welded to the
exposed face of the piles to provide a 40mm gap. Galvanised mesh
was spot welded to the spacers to provide adhesion grip for the
shotcrete. Shotcrete was applied to the exposed face of sheet pile
with adherence being provided by way of galvanised mesh.
The shotcrete is approximately 60mm in depth and provides corrosion
protection to the exposed face of the sheet pile. The undulating
profile of the sheet pile has also been used to create an interesting
feature wall. Steel sheet pile is an established solution in temporary
applications. This is an example of sheet being increasingly used
in permanent works.
