Foundations were excavated to a maximum depth of 5 metres to accommodate a new wire rope closing machine. In total, approximately 170 sheet piles were driven to a depth of up to 12 metres.

A large component of the completed first stage of Port Melville is constructed of sheet pile. LX12, LX16, LX25, LX20, LX25 and LX32 was supplied by Steelcom Pty Ltd and an on -site facility was established to weld 12 and 16 metre piles to achieve the required 18 metre lengths.

This involved the construction of a 60 berth boat basin for which Steelcom supplied LX32 sheet pile to form a hard vertical face.

The contractor inserted sheet pile into the core of the levee bank, thereby taking advantage of the piles’ inherent water resistant capacity and reducing disruption to a nearby golf course.

Piletech Australia has used Steelcom’s BSP SL20da Hammer in the $335M Perth Arena project.

The BSP SL20da, a 1.5 tone double acting hydraulic hammer is designed to drive single sheet piles and small bearing piles of concrete, steel and timber with a maximum impact weight of 1,850m.kg.

Albem Pty Ltd is using Steelcom’s HH1146 drop hammer in 14 tonne configuration to drive over 300 piles ranging in size from 900mm to 1200mm in diameter and up to 50m in length.

Clough utilised two BSP hydraulic piling hammers supplied by Steelcom. The 357-9 Series hammer was used in 9 tonne capacity and the HH1146 Series hammer, designed to meet the trend of larger, more heavily loaded piles, was used in 14 tonne capacity.

Taets Pile Breakers were used to make easy work of the cast in-situ concrete piles of the box drain and swimming pool. A Type 314 circular pile breaker with infill links was used to break both the 400mm and 600mm diameter piles.

Chevron Re-development

Rapcivic were attracted to the speed and low noise operation of hydraulic pile breakers given the dense city location of the development. The Type 380 is the largest hydraulic pile breaker available, capable of breaking circular piles from 600mm to 1800mm in diameter.
